Look out for possible hazards. Always be ready to stop quickly. Be ready in case other people do unexpected or dangerous things. After all, even if it's their fault, you'll be the one who gets hurt.
Give clear hand signals - don't leave the other road users to guess your movements.
Keep left - about a metre from the kerb or parked vehicles and visible to other drivers on the road. When passing parked cars, watch out for car doors opening.
Be extra careful at intersections - drivers may not be looking out for you.
Look after your Bike and Helmet
Before you get on your bike make sure it's working properly and keep it that way. Remember to check your pedals, steering, brakes, wheels, frame and helmet.
Always check your brakes and make sure the quick release levers are working before you ride.
Special Care
If you haven't turned
10 years old yet you should only ride on the road
with an adult.
Laces
Remember to tie your laces lightly and tuck them into your shoes otherwise they could get caught in your wheel spokes, and cause you to fall off.
Shoes
Always wear closed in shoes when you go for a bike ride.
